Abstract
Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of the lifestyle modification program, designed to improve the quality of life in patients with sarcopenia, which developed against the background of stage III—IV malignant solid tumors.
Contingents and methods: 80 patients with stage III—IV malignant neoplasms and sarcopenia treated at the "ONCOLIFE" medical center (Zaporizhzhia) took part in the study. Patients were randomly divided into two equal groups of 40 patients each. Group 1 (G1) received complex treatment, which, in addition to standard chemotherapy protocols, included lifestyle modification; group 2 (G2) received standard oncology treatment according to protocols. Quality of life was assessed using the SarQoL (Sarcopenia and Quality of Life) questionnaire. Determination of the quality of life in patients with sarcopenia was carried out before the start of treatment and thereafter every month for 6 months.
The lifestyle modification program, designed for patients with sarcopenia, which developed against the background of stage III—IV malignant solid tumors, leads to statistically significant improvement in the quality of life in all domains and in the total score. The greatest improvement in the quality of life was achieved in the following domains: physical and mental health, leisure activities, and fear
Indicators of general quality of life, physical and mental health, and body composition showed slow growth in the first months of complex therapy, and rapid growth in the last months. In the domain of mobility and functionality, a smooth and uniform increase in quality of life was noted throughout the treatment period. In the domains of daily activities and leisure activities, there was a slow increase in the quality of life at the beginning and at the end of the treatment, and its rapid increase in the middle of the therapeutic process. The fear domain showed rapid increase in quality of life at the beginning of therapy, with a subsequent slowdown.
