The state of mental health of the population and perspectives of development of mental health care in Ukraine

Abstract

n the article the main directions to improve the situation in the mental health sphere are presented: a necessity to develop a governmental strategy for the mental health sphere, which defi nes problems of mental disorders prevention as governmental priorities and provides a participation of all the society and inter-institutional interactions to solve this complex problem; a erforming of a structural reform in this fi eld directed on reestablishment of a community based care, which anticipates a broadening network of stationary-replacing care forms with a decreasing of a stationary services potential gradually; a transition from a predominantly medical model of mental health care to a biopsychosocial and, thus, multidisciplinary one and to a team approach to its delivery; an improvement of mental health care methodology with a maximal usage of opportunities of psychosocial therapy and rehabilitation, without limitations of treatment opportunities by pharmacotherapy only.

The reform of mental health care on the principles of community based mental health services requires governmental costs and support and an active participation of all the society, legislative and executive authorities, an adjustment of an inter-sectional interaction between institutions of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and other ministries and governmental departments
