Abstract Aim of our study was to reveal the features of emotional intelligence in family caregivers (FC) of patients with endogenous mental disorders and to investigate their connection with the mental component of quality of life. Emotional quotient test "EQ" by N. Hall, The Short Form-36, anxiety test by Spielberger — Khanin and Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) were chosen as psychological tes ting tools. 243 family caregivers of patients with paranoid schizophrenia (168 persons, FCPS) and patients with aff ective disorders — bipolar disorder, recurrent depressive disorder (75 persons, FCAD) were examined. Obtained data show that the respondents of FCPC and FCAD have a decrease of the indicators of emotional intelligence for all constructs, which not only correlates with the decrease in mental component of quality of life, but also creates signifi cant obstacles for successful psychological adaptation of individual family members, as well as for the harmonious functioning of a family, in which a mentally sick patient lives, in general. In psycho-emotional sphere of FC of patients with endogenous mental disorders, there is a tendency towards a gradual decrease of anxious and depressive psychopathological symptoms with the increase in the duration of disease in a mentally sick family member. Revealed features should be taken into consideration when creating appropriate psycho-educational and psycho-correction programs for FC of patients with endogenous mental disorders.
Key words emotional intelligence, family caregiver, quality of life, endogenous mental disorders
