Abstract | Epilepsy is diagnosed in 11— 25 % of patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Specific for epilepsy EEG changes are observed in 20—39 % of patients with autism. Epileptic process may precede the pervasive developmental disorder in the framework the autistic epileptiform regression. ASD may be complicated by seizures. Epilepsy and ASD can be the manifestations of a single disease process leading to disruption of brain development. The aim of the study was to identify the most effective and safe anti-epileptic drugs and other treatments for epilepsy in children with ASD. Were randomized 1535 of children. All antiepileptic drugs (AED) have shown a positive effect on seizures and on ASD symptoms. Valproate, lamotrigine, leve tiracetam and ethosuximide have shown a wide spectrum of activity against epileptic seizures and acceptable level of side effects. Some traditional methods of treatment of epilepsy that do not belong to the AED, such as the ketogenic diet, have positive effect both on seizures and some autistic manifestations. Gluten-free and casein free diet positively affect the ASD, but do not significantly affect the seizures. | ||||
